Who: Shiraishi Kuranosuke & Yukari
What: The siblings meet to talk after Yukari comes clean about her relationship with Kenya.
When: Right now! (Let's say night of the 7th?)
Where: Yukari's room
Rating: G
Yukari bundles herself up in the oversized sweatshirt she stole from her brother’s childhood room, pulling her knees up to her chest to pull the sweatshirt over her legs. It probably actually belongs to Chitose, the sleeves were so long that they fell well past her hands. She wrings the sleeves in her hands nervously. This whole thing isn’t going to go over well with Kuranosuke - it has been nine months without them telling him. But, she also hopes that he would see that she did eventually come clean.
She rests her chin on her knees and waits for her inevitable doom when her brother gets there.
Shiraishi really needed some time to calm down a bit. No wonder, after such a big news. It was hard to swallow, but not because of the news but rather time it took for him to receive it. It was why he was being as vague as he could about his reaction towards Kenya and online. Just to have that little revenge out of the way. As childish as it was, he didn’t really care.
Once settled enough, Shiraishi made his way to Yukari’s room and knocked. Normally, he’d likely knock and just walk in, but this was a bit different.
Yukari lifts her hand to tug nervously at one of her pigtails and takes a deep breath. “You can come in,” she says a bit more weakly than she means to. She feels like she is four years old and got into Ku-chan’s school bag and made a mess, again. Or that time when she was six and accidentally spilled paints on his school pants. Or that time when… actually, she is kind of a pain in his ass, she thinks, looking back on it.
After the invite, Shiraishi opens the door and walks in, closing the door with as quietly as he opened it. Then he just awkwardly stands there for a while. It’s funny how all of the times he’s spent thinking about how a talk between him and Yukari would go once she found a boyfriend or a girlfriend would go have just vanished from his head. Not that they would have made him ready for this.
Well. He should probably say something, at least? “Since December, huh? I don’t know how you managed to hide it from me for nine months. I must be blinder than I thought I am.”
Yukari looks up at Kuranosuke, taking in his expression. He doesn’t look as angry as she expected, but he is probably hurt. She feels like there is a bottomless pit in her stomach, like a stone would fall forever if dropped, and knowing that Kenya was just as upset isn’t making matters any better. But, she sets her jaw, refusing to get emotional. “Well… kind of. We told each other we wanted to start dating back in December, but you know I only moved here in April and our first official date was then…” Even coming out of her mouth, it sounds like a weak excuse.
“I’m sorry, Ku-chan. We should have said something sooner. We just really didn’t want to upset you - we didn’t think you’d take it super well.”
Shiraishi frowns. “Why would I take it badly if my best friend dated my little sister? There’s no one else I’d trust more to take care of you than him. Sure, it would have… is a shock, but I’m not upset at you. Either of you.”
He walks over and sits on the bed, not next to Yukari so she can choose if she wants to close the distance herself.
“I’m just hurt it took you so long to tell me. I mean, yeah, I was a mess, but… didn’t you think it would have been an uplifting news for me? To know you two are happy?”
Whatever personal space Yukari might have wanted is forgotten and she wraps her arms around him, pressing her cheek into his shoulder. “Yeah, I was dumb. But… ugh, I haven’t known what to do about you, either. It’s been a mess for me, too.” She sways a bit, pulling her with him, her lips folding into a pout. “I’m… well. It’s…” She doesn’t manage to stumble out the words she wants to say.
Shiraishi wraps his arms around Yukari, settling to pet her hair. “Sorry, you’ve been having a rough time for many reasons. I didn’t want to be one of them, but I’ll be fine now, so you don’t have to worry about your dumb big brother anymore.”
He sighs, just holding her a for a bit. “And honestly, I’ll be a bit hurt for a bit, but I’ll also get past that. Just … no more secrets for this long, okay? Especially if they’re as important as this?”
Yukari takes his words to heart… he did say no secrets, right? “Well… I’m in love with him, too. I wanna talk to him about maybe moving in together sometime in the future. It sounds a bit silly, I guess, but… I got so spoiled this summer getting to wake up with him all the time and now I feel kind of empty without him here.” That was more than she meant to say, but as soon as the words start to come from her mouth, they are free flowing.
Shiraishi should have likely expected that, but he didn’t… which makes him laugh. Maybe also as a means to break out the rest of the tension he had. He realizes that this might be the rudest place to laugh, so he quickly corrects himself.
“Sorry, sorry. I’m not laughing at what you said, just… I’m just glad you took my advice so immediately and it all just flew out so naturally”, he explains with a grin. “I’ll definitely support you, if you want to move together and all that. It sounds like a nice idea.”
Yukari gently shoves her brother, grinning at him despite herself. “Don’t just laugh at people when they’re sharing their real feelings with you, Ku-chan!” The smile doesn’t fade, the sparkle back in her eyes. Even if this wasn’t how she wanted it to come about, this is the first time in a while this felt normal. Whatever weird life-altering journey he had been on, Kuranosuke does seem more himself.
More relaxed, Yukari snuggles back into her brother’s chest again. “Thanks. I’m sorry we suck. I promise I won’t hide anything else from you… but, Kenya’s going to be so worried that you’re upset he’s dating your sister.” It doesn’t even occur to her that Kuranosuke has never heard her use Kenya’s name without an honorific. “And I think you should drag out every last painful second of making him believe the worst.”
Shiraishi just laughs a bit more at being shoved, before settling back to hugging Yukari again. It felt nice to know that things wouldn’t be too awkward between them even after now. Even if there was a whole bunch of things to get used to. Like names, as she just demonstrates. Well, it would be weird to hear her continue to use honorifics now, he reasons to himself.
Then there’s a mischievous grin on his face. “Yeah, Kenya’s not going to get out of this too easily. At least you came to me and told me. I don’t think he’d have told me before next years’ Christmas. Such a speed star.”
“So speedy.” Yukari lets out a shaky breath. She feels better, things are going to be okay, but her emotions swung from nervous and upset to laughing and relaxed so quickly that her stomach turns. “I was more worried you were going to find out because Kenya made some dumb off-handed comment to you. That’s more his style.” Even if this wasn’t ideal, she could only imagine Kenya spilling the beans in some unceremonious way that didn’t let Kuranosuke process it on his own before speaking with them. That would be worse.
Shiraishi lets out small huff, part amused and part a little upset. “Yeah, that sounds like a Kenya way to go about things. Am I really that scary that he can’t actually tell me straight to my face?”
Then again, he’s never had to tell anyone’s older siblings that he’s dating them. It was different, telling Miyuki than it would have been to someone older. But at the same time, they had been best friends for so long. He sighs.
“I’ll talk with him tonight. Let him know what it is that upset me and how I feel about you two. He might still need some girlfriend therapy afterwards… but it’s fine. I love both of you and want you to be happy. That’s what’s important.”
Yukari gives him a squeeze, hugging as tight as she can, like she did when they were small. Except back then she wasn’t a high performance athlete that lifts three plus times per week. Her hugs can be backbreaking, now. “I love you, too, Ku-chan. I’ll… make sure Kenya knows that you don’t hate him, just in case. You know how sensitive he is.”
It’s a rather tight hug, but Shiraishi welcomes the extra pressure. Though he does cringe a bit since Yukari can’t see his face. But only a bit. “Yeah, the boy a giant heart made out of glass”, he says with a soft hum. “He’ll be fine, with you reassuring him and it’s not like I’ll stay upset at him forever.”
He pets Yukari’s hair a little more. “I’ll have to delay my deer performance to another day.”
Yukari smiles softly up at him. “Yeah, okay. But don’t think I’ll forget.”
“Oh, believe me. I know you won’t.” At least Shiraishi has more time to come up with some silly things for deer language. “I better go now, though. Otherwise I’ll scare all the sleep out of him.”
“Yeah, then I won’t sleep, either. Revenge is only fun when it’s on Kenya.” Yukari kisses her brother’s cheek and let go of him, settling back with her legs pulled up under the hoodie, again. “And maybe tell Chitose-senpai I’m keeping this.”
Shiraishi laughs a bit again before smiling. “I don’t think he notices it’s gone, but I’ll make sure to let him know just in case.” He had a plan to go to Senri anyway, after meeting Kenya anyway.
“I’ll see you again soon, Yukari”, he says before leaving the room.
