Who: Kamio Akira and Tachibana An
What: A phone conversation while An is away with Shuuji and Kippei
When: While An-chan was away with Shuuji and Kippei this summer
Rating: PG
It had been a few days since Kippei and An had arrived to Tanegashima and their stay so far had been great. They had mainly explored the island and it’s beach and of course there had been some after dinner drinks on more than one night.
That is how An found herself quite buzzed once again but this time she had managed to make it to the room she was staying and flopped on the bed. After giving it a small thought she pulled out her phone and began to tap on the screen. It took a few moments of accidentally tapping on the wrong characters but An managed to dial the right contact and pressed the phone against her ear as she waited to see if Kamio would pick up.
Kamio was jogging down the apartment steps from one of his late night deliveries when he heard An-chan’s specific phone chime. A few seconds of fumbling later, he picked up with a somewhat breathless, “Moshi-moshi -- An-chan!”
“A-ki-ra-kun~” An grinned as she sounded out his name in response. Rolling on her side she listened to his breathing and slurred her thought. “Were you sleep running or just awake running?” Logically that was the best she could think up only just now taking in the hour and the strange possibilities that had planted in her brain.
“Hah?” Kamio noised, pausing his rapid decline mid-step. Then, brain catching up, he laughed into the phone and declared, “I just finished a delivery, so I’m work running!”
But his hours were a bit weird all the time. It begged the question, “Why is An-chan awake? Were you having fun?” he asked eagerly.
Almost infectious, An found a bubble of laughter escape her as he answered. “ I hope it wasn’t more plastic body parts , it's an odd hour to order some ” Rather anytime was an odd hour for that type of delivery.
Nodding against her phone she rolled around once again, “We were drinking, I think Onii-chan and Shuuji-kun went back to the beach, they’re probably skinny dipping again.”
Plastic parts? It took a moment to call up his mental picture of the fake laps. “No! I didn’t touch any fake laps!” Kamio said defensively. “It was gyudon from yoshinoya and a JUMP magazine!”
Tachibana-san was skinny dipping? With Tanegashima-san?
“...Oh…” Kamio stopped in front of the apartment. And then, he looked this way and that and asked at a whisper. “Are those two...you know?”
An couldn't help but laugh again, “ That's a much better delivery. More tasty, less creepy.”
There was some silence but she could still hear Kamio’s breathing, opening her mouth to speak she stopped and listened before a fit of hiccups and laughter took over her as she slurred, her kumamoto-ben even more apparent. “Why are you whispering, Akira?” Hiccup “Do you mean in the ocean? Or on the beach? That would be uncomfortable...”
“No no no!!” Kamio ended up yelling this time, quite red face as he attempted to explain with hand motions. Then, he remembered that An-chan definitely wouldn’t be able to see them. Damn. “I mean like. Together. Naked. In the ocean.”
Kamio was a little afraid for them. There were so many tuna...
She pulled away her phone from her ear slightly at Kamios reaction, “ I said they might be skinny dipping so they're probably naked and in the ocean and being dumb boys, maybe seeing who can handstand in the water the best.” It truly was a random thought but it was the best she could muster.
The mental image made Kamio sigh. He hoped they wouldn’t get hit in the face with any passing fish. At least the water was deep enough that things between their legs didn’t look like bait for passing seagulls.
“Is that…” Kamio frowned, wrapping his mind around this. “Is that considered a date?”
At the question she took a moment to think letting out a long hum as she gave it some thought, rolling again once more but this time she found herself rolling off the bed instead with a yelp and a thud. Putting a hand on her face she groaned, “I don’t see how that can be called a date, why?
“I don’t know,” Kamio muttered, managing to sound a bit sullen as he paced around the Tachibanana. “It sounded like they were dating online? But maybe you can be dating and not necessarily on a date. Especially if there are no vending machines.”
He knew he was kind of babbling -- almost like Shinji! “It doesn’t really matter though...Are you having fun? Did you miss it?”
An blinked slowly as she remained on the floor taking in everything that Kamio was saying, even if her head was fuzzy there was something that she knew, “Akira..” She drawled, “Don’t you think Onii-chan would tell you if he was dating someone?” Thought An was feeling curious with all of these questions, “He’d tell me and I can say he isn’t and if he’s secretly dating then I’m going to punch him in the gut.” She nodded against her phone as reassurance.
At his questions An took a moment to prop herself back up against the bed frame. “It’s been fun and I did miss my city but Tokyo’s my home now too.” She smiled to herself, “I miss you guys…” Sure, it hadn’t been but somehow being back was making her feel nostalgic.
Kamio paused mid-pace. Would Tachibana tell him? Maybe? Potentially? But he supposed that sometimes people wanted to keep the good news for themselves a bit before sharing. “...I don’t know?”
He would most likely tell An, but still, Kamio frowned and noted to ask Tachibana about it later.
“We miss you, too,” Kamio smiled, An’s admission put power in his step once more. “A lot. When you come back we’ll do all sorts of fun summer things, and I can’t wait to hear about hte fun stuff you’ve been doing.”
At Kamio’s answer she as quick to add, “He would definitely tell you, you guys are friends after all.” She wasn’t sure if that would help him reaffirm his own beliefs but that’s what An thought at least. They’re been friends for so long that it was hard for her to imagine that it be any other way.
“I want to go to the beach again and eat lots of watermelon or maybe we could go camping, that’d be lots of fun.” An grinned, she was actually going to camping for a night with Liliadent but going camping for a weekend near Tokyo would also be a good idea.
Kamio walked around his bike, fingertips toying with the seat at every revolution. “I mean I’m sure he would eventually? I don’t really see Tachibana-san wanting to keep something like that in forever but --”
But he wasn’t owed that information right away before a couple had time to enjoy it. He shook his head, wanting to get those thoughts out of it completely. They could have a much nicer conversation about the beach, “Did you smash a watermelon?” he asked enthusiastically. “Or have a swim race?”
Now he wanted to have a swim race too. Unconsciously, Kamio bounced on his feet. “Camping? Like where?”
An took notice to the change in conversation and decided to leave it at that for now, “No water racing but we smashed a melon.” She paused and laughed, “Well I didn’t smash it, my brother did but it was tasty.”
Fiddling with her phone for a moment she made her way back up onto the bed before resting her head against a pillow. “ Mmm, in the mountains, maybe? I’m sure we can camp close to home, it’d be fun.”
Kamio imagined that with a smile; An watching Kippei smash a watermelon and the two of them enjoying the pieces with Tanegashima. “Was it all gross or did it come out good?” when his sister smashed a melon, it had gotten all over him. It was kind of his fault for assuming he could hold it steady and run away fast enough.
“Not more than a couple hours away if it’s on a weekend,” he requested. “Then I could do one night. And--” oh no, he couldn’t say it. Kamio would have to be brave enough to stand whatever horror stories An wanted to tell.
“I think for the most part it didn’t turn out to bad, like it didn’t look like a murder scene.” She said with a laugh.
Listening to Kamios request she nodded to herself, “Of course, no more than two hours away so we can get back fast. I’ll start looking up places and talk with my brother.”
Murder scene.
Sometimes Kamio wondered if An-chan could read minds. Maybe he could ask her if they decided to partake in truth or dare around the campfire.
“I’ll let Shinji know. We can go and pick up some of the stuff we need,” because of course Ibu would want to be involved in anything having to do with supplies.
“I don’t actually own a tent but I can see if there's a campground that will rent out tents for us,” She paused, “Probably should also make a list of ingredients, you’ll want roasted vegetables?” Kamio always was the more healthy one of the bunch.
Forgetting that An couldn’t see him, Kamio nodded. Renting equipment was the easiest solution too. It would be expensive to rent a car big enough to get a bunch of gear up there.
“Yeah, and I can make some onigiri to bring up. You think we can find somewhere with fishing?” Kamio asked, like he actually had the patience for that.
“Probably...Have you ever gone fishing?” An couldn’t exactly picture the redhead sitting for more than 15 minutes and waiting for a fish to bite.
Sitting on his bike, Kamio searched his memory for the answer. “Spear fishing once at the beach. I wasn’t very good at it though. More seaweed went by than fish, and I was bummed at the end of the day when my dad wouldn’t let me eat it.”
Once he answered, An tried imagining Kamio just doing that and a bubble of laughter escaped her. “I don’t think I could do it either, sounds like you have to have excellent timing.”
“Hey, I’m plenty fast!” Kamio defended despite catching laughter himself. What he had in speed, he lacked in patience. Maybe that was why he always preferred playing doubles. “Maybe on a beach with more fish. Or like with a proper line so we can do other things too.”
As she calmed down a smile played on her lips, “Just in case we’ll bring some extra food if we do end up failing at catching anything.”
That was probably a good idea. Kamio was about to tell her as much when his phone buzzed. After clicking away long enough to skim the new customer request, he said with regret, “Speaking of food. Just got in a new rush order. But call me tomorrow? I’ll talk to Shinji and we can work out the details.”
Looked like Kamio was off again, “Mmm, okay~ I should call Shinji-kun, maybe tomorrow morning.” A yawn escaped her mouth as she rolled onto her side, “I’m sleepy anyways, stay safe and stay under the speed limit,” She joked, An knew her friend wouldn’t but on the safe side.
“My rhythm is totally safe!” Kamio lied loudly. “Go to sleep, An-chan. I love you, and please stay safe from tuna.”
Offering no further explanation, Kamio hung up.
