Cakes have been baked and decorated and all that is left is to taste! Win or lose in the end everyone gets cake. Isn't that what truly matters?

This Open log is open to everyone even if a character didn't comment and say that they were explicitly coming. Open area free for all.

DRINK TABLE AND MINGLING

[ever_yanagi]

As promised, Yanagi refrained from passing judgement on the cakes, instead helping with setting up the beverages. He made himself a nice hot cup of tea and parked himself in a corner to watch the chaos unfold.

Sanada spotted Yanagi, a safe harbour in the chaos around the cakes, and headed towards him. "Renji," He said in greeting with a nod before taking up position beside him with his own cup of tea. "I didn't know you were a cake expert."

"I could ask the same of you," Yanagi said with a slight smile. "You don't really like sweets, do you?"

"No." And when he did indulge he preferred the traditional Japanese variety. Though a shortcake on birthdays and Christmas was acceptable when eaten with friends or family. "But I thought it would be a good chance for a photo and visit friends." It was hard to clear enough time in his schedule to get all the way out this way so it was always nice when he could do several things in one trip.

"That's as good a reason as any," Yanagi agreed. He looked around at the room. "I'm just here to observe the chaos, but why don't we take a photo now?"

"Do you know if Seiichi is coming?" Sanada asked as he dug out his phone. He then flicked on the camera function before handing it to Yanagi. If they were going to take a selfie, Yanagi had the longer arms.

"Would he miss something like this?" Yanagi replied. He put an arm around his friend and took a picture, perhaps neglecting to warn Sanada beforehand.

Sanada gave a small chuckle as he thought about their friend. No, he would definitely make an appearance at some point if he wasn't busy with work. He was still contemplating Yukimura when Yanagi took the picture. He blinked and then looked at Yanagi. "Did you already take it?" That was hardly fair. He was going to have an odd expression on his face. But maybe it would make for an interesting journal photo anyway. He could fill up the entry by talking about how his genius friend wasn't smart enough to warn him he was taking the picture.

"You look constipated when you try to smile for photos," Yanagi informed Sanada. "It is more natural this way."

Sanada gave a grumpy snort at that. First Yukimura doesn't believe he laughs and now Yanagi thinks he can't smile. "I do not," Sanada said. He took his phone back and looked at the picture. He wasn't quite looking at the camera but he annoying did look quite nice in the photo. That didn't mean Yanagi was right, though.

"It's not just you. Posed photographs often look stiff," said Yanagi, though the fact that Sanada was an especially bad case went unsaid.

"I guess... What should we take a picture of next?" Sanada asked deciding to let his own stiffness go as he surveyed the room.

Kamio and Shinji had spent the better part of the afternoon hunched over a piece of posterboard, which had been carefully fashioned into the shape of a cake. One look at the design made it clear where the boys had focused their attention: many glitter glue strawberries and colorful fruit stickers surrounded a hastily written GANBATTE AN-CHAN!

The strawberries at the bottom of the design may have suffered in producing the light flush of drink on both of their faces. To enhance creativity, Kamio had said, when he brought them back one drink each from the convenience store.

Turning to his former doubles partner and now best friend, Kamio grinned and said, "On three?"

Shinji was a bit nervous. Of course he knew that An-Chan was an excellent baker. Many years at Fudomine had given him a number of opportunities to enjoy her culinary skills. That said, he was unsure of this interloping baker challenging her at cake baking.

In any case, Shinji wanted to cheer her on as any good friend would do. Having Kamio help with said cheering would make it twice as good in his opinion. He held one side of the cake-shaped poster and nodded at Kamio.

“One... two... three!” Shinji said and held up the cake poster with Kamio so he knew she could see it.

Even though they both said it on three, Kamio yelled his cheer a little too fast, so they were a very excitable and mismatched round, "GANBATTE AN-CHAN!"

Having her cakes in the oven, An was just about to start on her frosting but soon glitter filled her line of vision.

Blinking, she grinned at the colorful poster and cheer from the both of them. "You guys..." Her friends really were the best even when they took things a little to seriously. Giving the poster a proper look over she let out a small laugh, "Thank you~ The strawberries are really cute."

"YOU'RE VERY WELCOME," Shinji shouted, a small smile on his face after seeing how An-chan reacted. He turned to Kamio and gave him a thumbs up with his free hand. "I think she really likes it which means we did an awesome job. Thank you very much for getting some of the extra supplies and making it much better than what I initially had in mind. Without you, I don't think this would have been so good."

Following their shout, Kamio laughed as well and bounced on his heels, giving An-chan a wave. "They were Shinji's idea!"

"Nah," Kamio grinned and shoved Shinji conspiratorially with his hip. "You're the one who cut it so good! And see, see she really liked your idea for the glitter glue strawberries."

"I suppose, but you were the one that thought about stickers and stamps and the shape of the banner. I was just going to put the words on a rectangular piece of paper. You are very creative, Kamio, and it's really all thanks to your genius that we have this awesome poster for An-chan," Shinji said. He waved to An-chan as well. "IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME!"

An knew something was off as soon as Shinji started shouting considering his more reserved nature. She looked back to Kamio before raising an eyebrow with a sly smile. "You two have been drinking haven't you?"

Wiping her hands, she stepped closer to the pair and gave them a look over. "Doesn't matter really, you both had great ideas and they worked well."

Deciding to commemorate their hard work she pulled out her phone and tapped on her camera app before holding it up for a selfie where both boy and their banner could appear.

"Say cheese."

Kamio beamed, more than a little proud to be called tensai by someone who could wield that title with much more truth. "It really did come out pretty cool," he said. "An-chan is right -- we're still a good combination, Shinji." His free hand wrapped around Shinji's back to give him a fond squeeze before welcoming An-chan between them.

To An's question, he only grinned wider. "....Maybe," he said, failing to be sly for the warm flush clashing with his hair. Deciding to opt for distraction rather than elaboration, he held out his hand for the camera. "Want me to get this one?"

"Yes, you two are a great pair, two peas in a pod." She smiled finding her way in between the two before handing her phone over to Kamio. He was better for the job since he height trumped hers.

"I can tell pretty easily." Just their reactions and giddiness were a tall tale. Locking her arms into the combo An pulled them closer to her with a big grin as she looked up to Shinji and Kamio, "Really, it's means a lot that you both did this for me."

It was these little things that made he realize that she was lucky.

Shinji smiled for the picture, then turned to An-chan. "I figured since I couldn't be a judge and Kamio couldn't be a judge that we needed to figure out someway for you to know we were cheering you on and hoping that you did well because you're a very good baker and we want you to succeed," he said rapidly. "And I'm sure you have because it smells really good in here."

One hand on the poster, Kamio extended the other as far front as he could get it and tilted the phone until he could see himself, his two best friends, and some of the vibrant poster. The first one looked great -- but he didn't realize he set the camera to speed mode and clicked for the picture a few times, just to be sure.

Kamio grinned sheepishly down at An as he offered the phone back. 18 pictures would probably do okay? Knowing that at least one of them would be good was enough for him to recover. "We know that you'll always do your best and we want to support that."

He didn't have to like cake to properly cheer for his friend.

"What did you decide to make?"
