Who: Tachibana Kippei & Kamio Akira
What: Christmas date and now it's official. ♥
When: 'Twas the night of Christmas
Where:The Green Box of Love(tm) The oceanside
Rating: G
Kamio knew he had been the one to insist on a Christmas surprise for Kippei, but now that the moment was here, he felt nervous. Or well, as nervous as he could remember to be while on his bike with Kippei’s arms around him. There was also Kippei’s warm breath down his neck. He had been tasting that breath on Kippei’s doorstep not that long ago when -- to his chagrin -- both of their phones rang.
It was a sign from above to get on with it. And probably a blessing, too. Had they waited too long, all of Kamio’s decorations might have blown off the shipping container and into the night. That would neither benefit Kamio nor the environment.
“Look toward your left!” Kamio shouted over traffic as they drove over a particular bridge. The park beneath it showcased such spectacular lights. Although it was chilly to ride a bike in the winter, Kamio thought that the view paid off big time in different areas of the city. He just hoped that Kippei agreed with him.
For Tachibana to even begin to express the sheer joy he felt for the night they had ahead and the company he had the pleasure of being with, well, they would be there all night. And that was made especially clear by the way he lingered on his doorstep, more than happy to kiss him for all eternity until their phones fortunately had forced them on their way.
But that wasn’t so bad when he was promised being pressed up against Kamio on the back of the bike, sharing warmth even if it was between thick layers of clothing, and enjoying the sights of Tokyo disappearing into blurs of light.
Though it was difficult to make out Kamio’s exact words over the roar of the busy Tokyo sounds, Tachibana caught his drift, and rested his cheek on Kamio’s shoulder to look down over the park. It was just incredible - illumination displays were a dime a dozen, but from up above in particular there was no question it was stunning. Much like the man he had his arms wrapped around.
Just the thought made his stomach turn in happy, nervous circles, and naturally his arms tightened around Kamio. “It’s beautiful,” he shouted in return, though his cheek did not lift from Kamio’s shoulder. It was comfortable like this. Or that was the reason he told himself, at least.
“You’re beautiful,” Kamio said back. Not that Kippei would be able to hear him over the roar of the bike. It felt a little naughty, whispering nice things about the man at his back. And maybe later, if he was lucky, he could write those nice things with his fingertips on Kippei’s skin -- a secret between himself and the universe.
When the roads grew dark and quiet on the approach to the shore, Kamio revved the engine playfully and picked up a bit of speed. He didn’t throw caution out entirely, but there were no more stop lights and very few cars. They could afford a bit of silliness in the dark. And it grew sillier still; they came upon the mountains of shipping crates, the illuminated one visibly twinkling from their parking spot.
Instead of surprise, he said, “These lights are just for Kippei.”
Yet another ponytail was ruined by the wind in Tachibana’s hair, but it only made him laugh as blonde whipped him in the face from underneath the helmet. It was relatively reserved for Kamio who loved going fast, but it had him holding on just a bit tighter, pushing his chest firmly against Kamio’s back as chuckles found their way into Kamio’s ear.
As they came to crest atop where their destination lie, Tachibana’s eyes were immediately drawn to the lights even without Kamio’s words. His heart jumped into his throat with the realization that Kamio had put this together - that the secret surprise that he promised him the night of their yakiniku date was likely at least part of this display. He hadn’t anticipated it and it was, well, it was beautiful.
“I love it,” he said softly with the dying roar of the engine. “It’s stunning.”
The reassurance flip flopped his stomach. Or maybe that was just Kippei’s voice in that tone, making his insides do things that were more meant for roller coasters.
Kamio pocketed his keys and pulled off his helmet. Throwing a crooked smile over his shoulder at Kippei, he admitted, “There’s something I really want to yell, so I brought you here.” He waited for Kippei to slip off the bike before doing so himself and excitedly leading the way to the beckoning light.
Tachibana followed the motions, also removing the helmet, and tossing his hair to give it something resembling shape from being smushed beneath the padding. Riding on the bike with Kamio was so freeing - it was something that he would happily do over and over again and not just because it meant that he could press up against the smaller man’s back as he drove.
He stood up with his back stick straight to stretch out the muscles lining his spine and loosely held the helmet between his side and arm. “It’s the best place to do so,” he confirmed with an affirmative nod and followed Kamio to the shipping container.
Smiling widely with Kippei’s agreement, Kamio boldly reached for his free hand and held it as they walked. Sure, he was wearing bike gloves, but it was the principle of the hand holding that mattered. They were on a Christmas date, a fact which became even more apparent as they climbed closer to the container. The small area had been decorated with fairy lights and patterned with as many glow in the dark stars as Kamio could manage to glue to the metal. It wasn’t exactly natural stargazing, but the sound of the waves and the moonlight on the water added plenty of effect.
The brightest thing was still Kippei.
“Watch your step,” Kamio said, deftly stepping over the string lights.
Despite the layers of fabric between their joined hands, Tachibana enjoyed very much the continued physical contact even after they vacated the bike. It may have been his imagination, but he could swear that he could feel the warmth radiating from Kamio’s grasp, warming him to the very core. It was making him think all of these crazy, wild things; things that he too may be yelling toward the ocean.
The real treat was the clear labor of love that went into the decorations. Though the stars glowed low and out of the sky, it mimicked that of the evening sky unmarred from light pollution, and Tachibana swore up and down that those same stars were bouncing around in his stomach. “This is even more amazing than I thought,” he said, following the instruction to carefully step over the fairy lights. “I love it.”
Kamio’s smile glowed, more warm and inviting than the neon plastered to the ground beneath him. He squeezed Kippei’s hand and felt like he was really standing on the sky.
“I had to make something worthy of a fairy prince,” he teased, coaxing Kippei toward a heavy picnic blanket in the middle of the makeshift sky. Part of him wanted to scream his heart to the heavens now. The other part of him wanted to kiss Kippei. A small third sliver was of the opinion that this was all too good to be real, and he was definitely dreaming. Or in a coma after getting hit by a two by four while driving the Tachibanana. “I practiced, too, so I wouldn’t need a megaphone.”
“You practiced?” Tachibana said with clear surprise in his voice, his desire to tease back about the comment of being a fairy prince shoved aside in favor of that surprise, as he let Kamio guide him to the picnic blanket. He had always talked about how he wanted to reach out and touch the stars - with this, it was well within his grasp. “Yelling, you mean?” He wasn’t quite sure what Kamio intended on shouting to the ocean, but if it was even a fraction of that Tachibana was considering, well, he’d understand the desire to practice.
Yes, Kamio had practiced yelling to the ocean like the idiot he kind of felt like right now. He grinned sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck as a nervous habit.
“Yeah,” he admitted. His gloved hand held onto Kippei a little tighter where they stood in the middle of the blanket. “Can I still hold your hand while I do it?” Kamio asked shyly, his cheeks red with the cold. They were so close that his hair rippled with Kippei’s every exhale.
It would make Tachibana the happiest of Kamio continued to always hold his hand; he had become quite accustomed to how their fingers linked together just so, and it wasn’t all because of the gloves. “I wouldn’t want it any other way,” he assured Kamio, looking out toward the ocean. The gentle glow of the stick on stars and fairy lights at their feet and the moonlight dancing across the ocean created a beautiful display fitting of Christmas.
Empowered by that response, Kamio turned to the ocean. The water was impassive, unlike Kippei’s steady presence at his side. It bubbled up inside of him, ready and eager to burst, wanting so desperately to make itself known. So he let go.
“I LIKE TACHIBANA KIPPEI!!!” Kamio shouted. Probably to no one’s surprise. Not to Kippei’s, not to his own, but the words flew into the sky and exploded fireworks in Kamio’s heart. He panted with the effort and turned to Kippei, offering him a wide smile regardless of response or lack thereof. He didn’t do it so Kippei would say it back, after all.
The words shouted to the ocean were far from a surprise. In fact, if anything else Tachibana found it quite reassuring that Kamio finally voiced it because it gave him the courage to do the same thing. But it didn’t make hearing them any less special despite the rather unconventional way of doing so; Tachibana thought that his heart would soar straight out of his chest.
Tachibana returned Kamio’s wide smile with a small, fond smile of his own, tightening his hold on Kamio’s hand because he could and the feelings were mutual and now Tachibana was the one who was about to shout toward the ocean.
Much like the powerful speeches of taking one another to Nationals, Tachibana let his passion shine through. Everything that he was feeling, all of the special feelings and their physical exploration and everything else that had hit Tachibana like a tidal wave over the last five months. It was equally unexpected and somehow anticipated; Tachibana had made a promise to himself that he would fall head over heels in love and he was already halfway there.
“I’m on top of the world,” Tachibana shouted with an equal level of exuberance. It wasn’t quite the same proclamation - but that he preferred to be spoken face to face with Kamio instead. “Nothing can top this night,” he added on somewhat more gently, the smile softening as he turned his gaze back to Kamio.
Kamio’s happiness glowed, joy climbing into the atmosphere with Kippei’s excitable cry.
“I don’t know,” Kamio said coyly, stepping closer to trap their twined hands between their bodies. “I always think that but every time I see Kippei is better than the last.”
Or maybe Kippei was just so very wonderful that it couldn’t be comprehended outside his presence, so every time it felt more amazing than he remembered.
The words could not have rang any truer for Tachibana - they echoed in his heart and his soul and spread his wings. His grasp on Kamio’s hand tightened as they pressed closer together, the warm weight against his side further fueling the happiness that would boil over at any moment. Kamio was a great number of things - a wonderful friend, an endearing companion, an unwavering force, a master decorator - but this and everything that would be to follow was something new and exciting and Tachibana couldn’t wait to see where the wind guided them.
“That’s surely because of you,” Tachibana said with all but a twinkle in his eye. “For I’m only as good as the company I’m with.”
“Yeah, well, wild horses couldn’t pull me away from your side.” If Shinji were there, he would argue that wild horses could break every bone in Kamio’s body, but Kamio felt acutely that better and better days waited for them with the progression of time. Normally he would want to sprint for those days as fast as he could; Kippei taught him the value of appreciating certain things.
“I really want to kiss you,” Kamio said, more a warning than a request. He was surging to close the distance between them to taste the words Kippei had thrown into the air. It better than a fairytale -- a fairytale would be ending right now among the warm kisses and soft lights, but the night was just getting started.
Any thoughts about wild horses or the twinkling of city lights in the distance were promptly lost by the taste of Kamio’s lips. Rough fingertips calloused by many years of holding tennis racquets and heavy lifting in the gym brushed against the highest point of Kamio’s cheek on their way to thread thickly into red hair. Tachibana lost himself to the kiss, lips melding and snapping apart with gentle, wet sounds, and murmured appreciation for the growing desire in the pit of his belly.
Tachibana was certain for what he wanted; he was certain that it wouldn’t be met with resistance, though he hadn’t much wondered about what Kamio’s actual reaction would be upon being asked out, either. Given the romantic atmosphere, the impassioned declaration of life toward the ocean, and the eagerness by which Kamio brought them here to begin with, Tachibana knew they were on the same page. Yet the words were still left unsaid and Tachibana thought there couldn’t truly be a better time.
With a few gentle closed presses of lips, Tachibana gently drew away from the kiss, swiping his other thumb along the strong line of Kamio’s jaw. “Akira,” he said quietly, tone filled with affection and fondness. “Before we continue, I’d like to ask you something.”
Kamio licked his lips, which were still shiny from their very effusive affections toward each other. Nodding mutely and leaning into the familiar touch, he turned his thrill-clouded gaze up on Kippei. He should listen now before he fastened himself to Kippei all over again like a marathon runner in need of a blanket for the drastic change in body temperature.
The moon twinkled in Kamio’s eyes. The stars would, too, were they bright enough to light up midnight blue eyes. The fairy lights washed them both in a light, airy glow, and Tachibana felt that those same lights echoed on his heart. The moment was perfect, but all Tachibana could do was kiss Kamio again.
Impulse had him pulling Kamio closer and closer until they were flush against one another, warm fingers carding through red strands. All of it was perfect - so perfect that all he could truly do was express to Kamio how perfect it was by warm, chapped lips, and grazes of tongue.
That wasn’t a question. But it didn’t stop Kamio from answering. He went trustingly forward against Kippei’s larger frame and up on his toes. The magic between them is delicious, making Akira cling tightly to Kippei’s muscled shoulders and welcome his lips eagerly with his own.
He wasn’t sure how many times or angles they explored. Enough for Kamio to whisper a ragged, “yes,” without even hearing Kippei’s question. It didn’t matter. He would give Kippei anything that he wanted.
It was an agreement to an unspoken question. Likely once the brain had the opportunity to catch up to the mouth Kamio would realize that what he said was quite a declaration. But Tachibana would be lying if it didn’t make his heart soar even further into the sky. It made Tachibana smile against Kamio’s lips as he murmured, “So… you’ll be my boyfriend then?”
As he backed up to look at Kippei, Kamio licked his lips and stared, dark eyes wide with wonder and surprise.
It shouldn’t have been a surprise. Really, it shouldn’t have been. But here he was. Heart lodged in his throat, vulnerable and easy for the taking. Not that Kippei had to — it belonged to him anyway.
When had he started trusting Kippei more than the voice in his head saying that he wasn’t enough?
Lightly tugging a lavender lock, Kamio smirked. The confidence bubbling up in his chest was a thing surer than he ever felt.
The dark blue eyes that had been plaguing Tachibana’s every absent thought and nightly dreams hid nothing. The confidence that Kamio felt was palpable - so much that Tachibana wondered if he could absorb that confidence through joined lips and gentle touches because it was quite possibly the sexiest thing he had ever experienced. Kamio was confident, Tachibana was confident, and together they were confident that their feet and wings at their back were guiding them to this journey that was only just at the start.
Everything about it brought a bright, dazzling smile to Tachibana’s lips. Words were unneeded - he had his answer enough. Naturally his head tilted in the direction of the tug which only served to make the smile widen. Strong arms encircled around Kamio to pull him close once more, chests flush. “Great,” he said softly.
How could a smile that warm and soft pierce his heart at both ends?
He surrendered that strand of hair to bury his hand in the thick of it when Kippei pulled him near. His own smile must have reflected Kippei’s, because his face kind of hurt for it.
“I’ll definitely get you a lot of vending machine drinks,” Kamio whispered his affection at a hum. “What else should a boyfriend do?”
Tachibana’s head tilted naturally into the touch. Kamio’s fingertips grazing over the back of his scalp was alluring, drawing him closer and closer until he could graze their lips together once more. Any lingering anticipation promptly fled, leaving him feeling like he simply wished to express his affection in this night that was still young. Even as he spoke, he did not move too far so as to not allow their lips to brush with the words.
“Many vending machine drinks,” he agreed. “I have a few ideas… fun dates, long walks on the beach, nights curled up together under the kotatsu…”
His restless fingers traced the gentlest of circles to the curve of Kippei’s skull, drawing all the tender attention that he couldn’t quite articulate. This close, Akira could taste the decadent joy in Kippei’s words. “And maybe a proper night under some real stars.”
Although he rather imagined that he would see stars of some kind no matter what while with Kippei.
Not realizing that he had said that part aloud, Akira closed the distance between them in another kiss. They could enjoy the rest of the date later -- right now he only had an appetite for Kippei’s intimate company.
A proper night under some real stars seemed like a grand plan. Perhaps Kamio would be willing to let his part-timers take the business over for a few days so that Tachibana could whisk him off to Kyushu for a few romantic nights on the beach; the best of the stars could be seen when there was no light pollution covering the sky. Or if they couldn’t make it so far south, there were beautiful places in Chiba that could very well accomplish the same thing that wouldn’t require so much time off work. But there would be many nights where Tachibana could whittle Kamio down and convince him. Even if it took some well placed touches of tongue and fingertips.
There would be plenty of time to discuss all the future dates they would go on. When Tachibana looked toward the future, there had never been any doubt that Kamio would be an important part of it. And now, there was an even greater reason to think so.
Tachibana didn’t let Kamio escape his iron woven arms, instead letting the emotions ride him through their kiss. Were there such thing as perfection, Tachibana would believe it to be this.
